No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. But indeed we accuse them and bring them to justice with just hatred, who, softened by the flattery of present pleasures, and corrupted by the cares and troubles they are about to experience, blinded by lust, do not foresee, and the like are in fault, who forsake their duties through the indolence of the mind, that is the flight of labors and pains.
